GARDEN CLUB

Our Woodbrook garden club started about 13 years ago when our PTO gave Mrs. Jackson’s homeroom class money to get started.  SInce then, we have been planting throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Who is a part of Garden Club?    This year we have about 20 fifth graders on our Garden Club roster, and we have had some fourth graders help out when needed.

Mrs. Jackson will invite fourth graders through a Sign Up Genius link to get a garden club experience or two this spring.

When do we meet?  Garden Club currently meets after school on Tuesdays from 2:35-3:30.  Fifth grade gardeners are divided into two different groups and garden every other week into the first of November.  We will take a winter break and pick back up near the end of March.  Then we will garden until the end of the school year.   During the summer months, Mrs. Jackson hosts open garden nights once a week for incoming and outgoing fifth graders and family members.

What do we grow? Cold weather plants- spinach, lettuce, kale, sugar snap peas, radishes, and onions.

Spring-summer plants- tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelon, potatoes, peppers, beans, carrots, basil, rosemary, oregano, and mint.

We also maintain Tyler’s garden by planting annuals, flower bulbs and perennials.

Jack Ziegele, an Eagle Scout, is refurbishing the garden beds using cedar planks and adding a new raised bed.  He is also repainting the garden sign.

LOST & FOUND

Important Reminder: Kids lose things… often! Our Lost & Found is already overflowing. Please be sure to write your child’s name in/on their belongings. This is especially helpful for jackets, hats, and gloves because they’re more likely to be removed. We’ve also been accumulating water bottles and lunch boxes.

You can come in to look through the Lost & Found if there’s something you know is missing. When it’s this full, we have to donate things after a couple months. We’ll do a complete clean-out before Winter Break.

BIZ TOWN - 5th GRADE

BizTown for the 5th graders is coming up on December 2!  Info and a sign up genius will be sent out in the coming weeks for parents that would like to volunteer. BizTown will be held at the Junior Achievement of Central Indiana and will be from around 9am-2pm. It’s a fun and exciting day and always a very popular day to volunteer for! Sign up for parent volunteering will be first come first serve. Teachers will provide info in their weekly newsletters when the sign up genius will be sent out. Stay tuned for more info!

Note From Dr. Beresford

Safety Referendum funds are being used to support equity and inclusion efforts?

Fact. The safety referendum supports multiple facets of student services including the addition of an Equity and Inclusion Officer, School Resource Officers, safety initiatives, a partnership with mental health providers, and professional development and training.

While safety measures include physical enhancements such as building access renovation and cameras, the addition of mental health and equity and inclusion staff also contribute to our goal of providing a safe learning environment for all students.

“The absolute #1 priority when creating a safe environment is building relationships,” explains David Woodward, CCS Director of Student Services. “Students must feel connected and engaged in their schools because people protect what they love.”

Staff who oversee equity and inclusion initiatives ensure our students and staff of diverse dimensions including (but not limited to) abilities, age, gender, military status, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status are safe and included. Beyond training and support, our Equity & Inclusion Officer also serves as the district’s Title IX and Anti-Discrimination Coordinator. In order for our students to perform well academically, they need to feel safe, both physically and psychologically. They need to feel a sense of belonging. They need to feel seen and valued for who they are.

Carmel Clays Schools provides layers of protection, both proactive and reactive, to keep our community safe. We encourage the community to learn more about our referendums and how they contribute to our overall district funding.

FRIENDS OF THE LION
Thank you again for your generous giving during our Friends of the Lion Campaign! The kids enjoyed their Popsicle Party on Friday, September 23, despite the fall temperatures. Because of your financial support, our school community gets to enjoy moments like these throughout the school year. Thank you again!
SPIRIT WEAR

Thank you to everyone who purchased spirit wear this fall!  We apologize for the delay getting those out to the students....there were MANY issues at the warehouse this year.  Thanks for your patience!  If you missed the order in September, there are more opportunities to purchase coming up!

THANK YOU CUSTODIANS!

Thank you to all our amazing members of the custodial staff.  We appreciate everything you do everyday to make our school a better place!
